Nivea Aftershave Balm - Bang for the Buck Primer

The Bulky Bottle
This is a recent discovery that has changed my life!

You know how beauty-gurus always say ‘it is a crime not to prime’ your face before splashing make-up on your face. What (I feel) they don’t tell you, is how a primer can cost three times the drugstore foundation you might be using. When I was getting into make-up,
which is not more than a year ago, I started with Benefit POREfessional which did me a damage of $ 31 (~ INR  2,000). I couldn’t find many other primers in the market at a cheaper price which had decent reviews, and all the beauty articles and Youtube videos made me feel horrified about not using a primer. You know, since it is a crime and all.

That is why when I heard from KathleenLights that the Nivea Aftershave Balm works as a better primer than even the high-end primers, I HAD to try it out for myself. I bought my bottle from for less than INR 200 for 100 ml!

About the Product

Packaging – is very bulky. Plus, it comes in a glass bottle. Easy to shatter and not-so-easy to carry around when you are traveling. Packaging is one of its biggest cons.

Consistency and scent – It has a runny consistency, and a typical after-shave scent. You don’t need a lot of product for your entire face. Probably, less than a pea-size amount. I use it almost 4 days a week; have been using for the last 3 months – my bottle is still half full. On the skin, the product gives a tacky feel, which sort of helps the make-up to bind to your skin, and stay as is for long. The aftershave scent can be bothersome at times, but it doesn’t linger for long.

Does it work - Depends on what you are using the primer for. If it is to pro-long your make-up, it definitely does! It has Glycerin as a key ingredient, probably hence the tacky feel, and hence helps make-up adhere to skin so well. This product works best for skin without imperfections, such as pores and fine lines. It also gives a healthy shine to your face, instead of the straight matte look.

The Goods:
1.       Perfect to make your make-up stay longer
2.       Use on good skin days when you have an even texture
3.       Perfect for the college-goers – cheap and works perfect on young and firm skin
4.       Gives a healthy shine and hence, a natural look to the face
5.       Works like a dream for Powder Foundations. I have always struggled with Powder Foundations not staying long enough. But the glycerin in this product makes the product stick to your skin. No need for using a setting spray if you are using this as a primer
6.       Price!!

The Bads:
1.       Not the best for oily skin – not too long before it makes your make-up look oily. However, can set the make-up well with a setting powder for better results
2.       Very bulky to take with you on vacations

3.       Does nothing to reduce your pores or erase other skin imperfections
